About the Weight Watchers Calculators

Weight Watchers (now WW) has evolved its points system over the years to better reflect nutritional science. This calculator supports the three most popular iterations of the system, allowing you to track using whichever method works best for you.

SmartPoints (Current Style)

Introduced around 2015, this system penalizes sugar and saturated fat while rewarding protein. Calories are the baseline, but high-sugar foods cost more points than their calorie count would suggest.

  • Factors: Calories, Saturated Fat, Sugar, Protein.
  • Goal: Encourage lower sugar intake and lean protein sources.

PointsPlus

Launched in 2010, this system moved away from calories entirely, focusing on macronutrients. It considers the energy cost of processing food (thermic effect), meaning protein "costs" less than carbs or fat.

  • Factors: Protein, Carbohydrates, Total Fat, Fiber.
  • Goal: Focus on filling foods and macronutrient balance.

Classic Points

The original system (1997) purely based on calories, fat, and fiber. It's simple and effective for pure calorie restriction but doesn't distinguish between "good" and "bad" calories as well as modern systems.

  • Factors: Calories, Total Fat, Fiber (capped at 4g).
  • Goal: Simple calorie control and fat reduction.

? Frequently Asked Questions

SmartPoints is generally considered the healthiest as it actively discourages sugar and saturated fat. However, many people still find success with PointsPlus because it allows for more fruit (which was 0 points in that system).

In most modern WW plans, fresh fruits and non-starchy vegetables are zero points. You do not need to calculate them here unless you are on a very old plan or using a smoothie/juice recipe.

The PersonalPoints system is highly customized to the individual and difficult to replicate with a generic calculator. This tool uses the standardized SmartPoints formula which is very close for most foods.
