Shoe Size Charts Explained

Shoe sizing systems vary significantly across the globe. The most common systems are:

  • US (United States): Based on the length of the last (the mold the shoe is built on), measured in barleycorns (1/3 inch). Men's and Women's scales are different (usually a 1.5 difference).
  • UK (United Kingdom): Similar to US sizing but offset. A UK size is generally about 1 size smaller than the US male equivalent and 2 sizes smaller than US female equivalent.
  • EU (Europe): Uses Paris points, where one point is 2/3 of a centimeter (6.67mm). This system is unisex.
  • CM / JP (Japan): The most logical system. It simply represents the length of the foot in centimeters. Often used as "Mondopoint" in ski boots.

How to Measure Your Feet

  1. Place a piece of paper on the floor against a wall.
  2. Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall.
  3. Mark the tip of your longest toe with a pencil.
  4. Measure the distance from the edge of the paper to the mark in centimeters.
  5. Use this CM measurement to find your size in the chart above (select 'CM' as source).

Tip: Measure both feet and use the larger measurement. Feet often swell during the day, so measure in the afternoon.

? Frequently Asked Questions

No, especially in the US and UK. In the US system, a Men's size 7 is roughly the same length as a Women's size 8.5. In Europe (EU), the numbering is unisex, though the width/fit might differ.

While charts provide a standard, brands use different 'lasts' (molds) which affect fit. Athletic shoes (like Nike) often run small, while boots might run large. Always check the specific brand's size guide if possible.

CM stands for Centimeters. It is widely used in Japan and Korea. It indicates the length of the foot the shoe is designed to fit. It is arguably the most accurate way to buy shoes online.
