How to Calculate Gas Mileage

Calculating your vehicle's fuel economy is simple. Follow these steps for the most accurate result:

  1. Fill your tank completely and reset your trip odometer to zero.
  2. Drive until you need gas again.
  3. Fill the tank completely again and note how many gallons/liters it took.
  4. Note the distance on your trip odometer.
  5. Divide the distance by the fuel volume.

MPG = Miles Driven ÷ Gallons Used

Estimating Trip Costs

To plan a road trip budget, you need three numbers: total distance, your car's average MPG (or L/100km), and the average gas price.

Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Gas Price

For example, a 500-mile trip in a car that gets 25 MPG with gas at $3.50/gallon:
(500 ÷ 25) = 20 gallons needed.
20 × $3.50 = $70.00 Total Cost.

? Frequently Asked Questions

This varies by vehicle class. For a modern sedan, 30+ MPG is good. For hybrids, 50+ MPG is standard. For trucks/SUVs, anything over 20 MPG is decent.

MPG is affected by driving style (aggressive acceleration uses more fuel), terrain (hills), tire pressure, and speed (highway vs city).

Liters per 100 kilometers is the standard metric measurement for fuel economy. Unlike MPG (where higher is better), a lower L/100km means better efficiency because you use less fuel to go the same distance.
