How to Calculate GPA

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a numerical representation of your academic performance. It is calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted.

The Formula

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credits

Step-by-Step Example

Suppose you took 3 classes:

  1. Math (3 credits): You got an A (4.0 points).
    Points = 3 × 4.0 = 12.0
  2. History (3 credits): You got a B (3.0 points).
    Points = 3 × 3.0 = 9.0
  3. Lab (1 credit): You got a B+ (3.3 points).
    Points = 1 × 3.3 = 3.3
  • Total Points: 12.0 + 9.0 + 3.3 = 24.3
  • Total Credits: 3 + 3 + 1 = 7
  • GPA: 24.3 ÷ 7 = 3.47

Standard 4.0 Scale

  • A = 4.0
  • A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3
  • B = 3.0
  • B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3
  • C = 2.0
  • C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0.0

? Frequently Asked Questions

A weighted GPA gives extra points for difficult courses like AP or Honors classes (e.g., an A might be worth 5.0 instead of 4.0). This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.

Usually, a 'W' (Withdrawal) does not affect your GPA. It appears on your transcript but has no point value and the credits are not counted in the divisor.

To raise your GPA, you need to earn grades higher than your current average. Retaking classes where you earned a D or F can also significantly boost your score if your school allows grade replacement.
