How Golf Handicap is Calculated
The World Handicap System (WHS) calculates your handicap index by averaging the lowest Score Differentials from your recent rounds.
Score Differential Formula
(Score - Course Rating) × (113 / Slope Rating)
This formula adjusts your gross score based on the difficulty of the course (Rating) and the difficulty for a bogey golfer relative to a scratch golfer (Slope). The standard slope is 113.
Rounds Counted
If you submit 20 scores, the system averages the lowest 8 differentials. If you submit fewer than 20 scores, a sliding scale determines how many are used (and sometimes applies an adjustment to be conservative).
- 3 Rounds: Lowest 1 (minus 2.0 adjustment)
- 5 Rounds: Lowest 1
- 10 Rounds: Average of lowest 3
- 20 Rounds: Average of lowest 8
