About Dice Rollers
Virtual dice rollers use a random number generator (RNG) to simulate the throw of physical dice. They are essential tools for tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, board games, or teaching probability in math class.
Common Dice Types
- D4 (Tetrahedron): Used for small damage rolls.
- D6 (Cube): The standard die found in Monopoly, Yahtzee, and casinos.
- D8 (Octahedron): Often used for weapon damage.
- D10 (Pentagonal Trapezohedron): Used for percentile rolls (0-9).
- D12 (Dodecahedron): Used for large weapon damage.
- D20 (Icosahedron): The signature die of D&D, used for skill checks and attacks.
Probability
The average roll of a single die is calculated as: (Sides + 1) / 2.
For a D6, the average is 3.5. For a D20, it's 10.5.
When rolling multiple dice (e.g., 2d6), the results form a bell curve distribution, making extreme values (2 or 12) rare and middle values (7) most common.
