Army Body Fat Calculator
Calculate your body fat percentage according to U.S. Army Standards (AR 600-9). Determine if you meet the compliance requirements for your age and gender.
Measure below the Adam's apple.
Measure at the navel.
About the Army Body Fat Calculator
This calculator estimates body fat percentage using the specific algorithms defined in Army Regulation 600-9 (The Army Body Composition Program). It is designed to help service members and recruits check if they meet the required standards for their age group.
Unlike general body fat calculators, the Army method relies heavily on circumference measurements of the neck and abdomen (and hips for women) to estimate body composition.
How to Measure Correctly
To get accurate results consistent with Army tape tests:
- Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple). Keep the tape flat and parallel to the ground.
- Waist (Men): Measure at the navel level. Arms should be at the sides. Measure at the end of a normal exhale.
- Waist (Women): Measure at the narrowest point of the abdomen, usually halfway between the navel and the sternum.
- Hips (Women only): Measure around the widest portion of the buttocks so the tape is parallel to the floor.
Failing the Standard?
If your calculated body fat percentage exceeds the maximum allowable limit for your age group, you may be flagged for the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP).
However, this calculator is an estimation tool. Official compliance is determined by certified unit personnel. If you are close to the limit, consider verifying with a professional or cross-referencing with our general Navy Method Body Fat Calculator.
? Frequently Asked Questions
This calculator uses the tape test standards defined in AR 600-9. While the Army is exploring new technologies (like body scanners), the tape test remains the primary method for field assessment.
A larger neck circumference, relative to height and waist, is mathematically associated with higher lean muscle mass in the Army's regression equations.
Yes, soldiers who score 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), with at least 80 points in each event, are exempt from body fat taping.
